Aunt Sally's House
1934
black-and-white lithograph
11" x 14” plate
Here you see a rural scene of Salley DeShields standing at the doorway of her humble home. Although the house appears a bit run-down and humble, it still reflects warmth and hospitality. This is a fine example of some of the socioeconomic inequality that existed, and quite honestly still exists in society. Socioeconomic inequality means that there are significant differences between groups of people in regard to financial income, housing, education, and opportunity.
Do you believe this house looks welcoming and warm or cold and daunting? What about this house gives you that impression?
