INTRODUCTION TO THE FOLIO

This folio presentation of preparatory drawings, newspaper clippings, written notes, letters, literature, lithographs, and serigraphs are intended to supplement the visual images on the walls of the Gallery. This information enhances the intellectual and historical context of the Museum.

Most of the images in this folio are not aligning the walls of the museum; but are presented because they add to the story of creating and documenting art pertaining to black life on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

The prints that are identical to some exhibited in the gallery space are shown in this book because they are also featured with key studies, color proofs, and written notes that provide insight into the mysterious process of making a work of art. The making of this art is even more curious as it was a part of the healing process for a community of people at a time when the memory of slavery was painful–and when the stark reality of segregation created hardships.
