The context of our chronicle of black life on Maryland’s Eastern Shore expands when one reflects upon this lovely sketch made in New York City by the artist responsible for most of the artwork aligning the gallery walls. She and a “few friends” were gathered in New York, where Leadbelly sang on an impromptu basis. The strong positive stance of Leadbelly reflects the same confident posture of David in Little David Play Upon Your Harp.
