Joshua Fit de Battle ob Jericho

1943

Black-and-white lithograph

10" x 13" plate

This lithograph depicts a true historical moment of good vs. evil. Notice the devil bowing to the ground in defeat. This devil represents a man named Max Schmeling who was a German Nazi and professional boxer. The fighter who stands tall above this devil is Joe Louis. Louis was a professional boxer and represents the good and strength of the country. During this fight, he stood for not only people of color in America, but also for America as a whole. This fight became significant for reasons much bigger than boxing; it became a discussion of political and social conflict. In addition, it was a source of pride and honor for the black community. This is a fine example of a person of color fighting proud for the country they were brought to as enslaved individuals. Not only is this brave, but it is also heroic.

Below the image of the lithograph is a real-life image of  Max Schmeling and Joe Louis. Do you see any similarities? How does Ruth Starr Rose add to this original scene?
